Description: Dorsal charcoal, grey or black, ventral paler or silver; vertical bars 6-7 narrow dark greyish, sometimes faint, separated by lighter spaces; mouth blue black; tongue, palate, and floor of mouth white or cream. Body oblong and compressed; profile, dorsal more convex than ventral. Snout widely rounded. Ventral area of chest up to origin of pelvic fins scaleless. LL scutes strong 23 to 40. (Ref. 55763, 90102)

Adults are benthopelagic in sandy bottoms at the foot of the edge of the outer reefs, continental coasts and around islands (Ref. 9283). Solitary or forming small schools (Ref. 30573). Mainly nocturnal (Ref. 4887). Marketed fresh and salted or dried (Ref. 9283).

體呈橢圓形,側扁而高。吻鈍。脂性眼瞼不發達。上頜末端僅延伸至眼前緣下方。上下頜各具一列細小而尖之齒,鋤骨、腭骨及舌面均無齒。體被小圓鱗,胸部裸露區域自胸鰭基部下方1/2處延伸至腹鰭基部起點。側線中度彎曲,彎曲部上有鱗片54-66枚,直走部上全為稜鱗,尾柄處之稜鱗強大。口腔周圍深黑色,僅舌和口腔背面呈乳白色,是本屬之重要特徵。體呈褐色或深褐色,幼魚時體側具暗色橫斑,隨著成長而逐漸不顯著,成魚則消失。背、臀鰭暗色或黑色,有時有淡色緣;幼魚時,腹鰭基黑色,隨著成長逐漸形成一致之白色;尾鰭暗黃色。

The whitetongue jack (Uraspis helvola) is a species of jack in the family Carangidae. It is found in all tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. Adults can grow up to 58 centimetres (23 in).

Distribution and habitat

This species of fish is found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide.[2] In the Atlantic Ocean, it is found in west Africa. In the Indian Ocean, its range is from the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf south to eastern Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, and Comoros. It is also found in western India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the Andaman Sea, western Sumatra, southern Indonesia, and western and southern Australia. In the Pacific Ocean, it is found off eastern Asia, around Hawaii, and New Zealand.

Description

Adults can grow up to 58 centimetres (23 in) but usually grow up to 35 centimetres (14 in).[2] This fish has 9 dorsal spines, 25 to 30 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines, and 19 to 22 anal soft rays.[2]
