體呈橢圓形，側扁而高。吻鈍。脂性眼瞼不發達。上頜末端僅延伸至眼前緣下方。上下頜各具一列細小而尖之齒，鋤骨、腭骨及舌面均無齒。體被小圓鱗，胸部裸露區域自胸鰭基部向下延伸至腹鰭基部起點而不中斷。側線中度彎曲，彎曲部上有鱗片73-80枚，直走部上全為稜鱗，尾柄處之稜鱗強大。口腔周圍深黑色，僅舌和口腔背面呈乳白色。體背深褐色，體側淡灰色，幼魚時體側具暗色橫斑，隨著成長而逐漸不顯著，成魚則消失。背、臀及尾鰭淡色或稍暗色；幼魚時，腹鰭基部白色，尾端黑色，隨著成長逐漸形成一致之白色。
棲地
