Pacific Redtail Scad

Deep bodied compared to similar species (Ref. 48635). Body color bluish green above, silvery below; caudal fin bright red. Sometimes a yellow mid-lateral stripe (Ref. 48635). Opercle with a small black spot; margin of opercular membrane smooth. 31-38 scutes.

Pelagic species which occurs in inshore waters of the continental shelf and continental slope (Ref. 75154). Found in deep waters. Feeds on small planktonic invertebrates.

Adults are found in deep waters. They feed on small planktonic invertebrates (Ref. 5213). Occasionally seen in small groups along reef slopes at moderate depths. Mainly known from trawls and shows red tail after capture (Ref. 48635).

分布於非洲東岸、印尼、菲律賓、澳洲、中國東海、台灣及日本等地。台灣各沿岸皆有發現，產量豐富。

一般漁法以底拖網、流刺網、中層圍網、定置網捕獲。煎食或加工成罐頭。

體呈長橢圓形，微側扁。頭較短而吻尖。脂性眼瞼非常發達，僅於眼之中部留下一長細縫。上頜呈一非常窄之齒帶，下頜呈一列細齒；鋤骨呈矢形齒帶；腭骨及舌面呈細長齒帶。肩帶下角具一淺凹，其上方有二小乳突。下枝鰓耙數(含瘤狀鰓耙)28-30。背前鱗延伸至眼前緣之上方。側線直走部始於第二背鰭第12-13鰭條之下方，全為稜鱗。胸部完全具鱗。第二背鰭與臀鰭同形，前方鰭條呈新月形，後方具一離鰭；胸鰭長，末端僅延伸至第二背鰭起點之後。體背藍綠色，腹部銀白。背鰭前方鰭條有時較暗色；尾鰭紅色；餘鰭淡色。

經常聚集成群巡游於中水層，有時可達水深300公尺處。主要以濾食浮游動物為生。
