Head Band Surgeonfish

A whitish bar broadly bordered by dark brown from origin of dorsal fin across operculum. Caudal fin without a white posterior margin. Caudal concavity 10.5 to 12 times in SL. Body depth 1.7 to 1.8 times in SL (Ref 9808).

Inhabits primarily boulder-strewn areas of surge zone and browses on filamentous algae (Ref. 9710). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Often in schools (Ref. 9710). Minimum depth reported from Ref. 27115.

分布於太平洋板塊區內，是反赤道分布的魚種，包括日本、臺灣、夏威夷群島、小笠原群島、馬里安那群島、拉帕島、新加勒多尼亞及土木土群島等。台灣產於蘭嶼及綠島。

一般以流刺網、延繩釣或潛水鏢魚法等捕獲。體色迷人，以作為觀賞用魚為主。尾柄上骨質盾板非常銳利，易傷人，處理時需小心。

體呈橢圓形而側扁。頭小，頭背部輪廓不特別凸出。口小，端位，上下頜各具一列扁平齒，齒固定不可動，齒緣具缺刻。背鰭及臀鰭硬棘尖銳，分別具XI棘及III棘，各鰭條皆不延長；胸鰭近三角形；尾鰭近截形或內凹。體黃褐至褐色；眼後頭部具一暗褐色緣之白色寬斜帶，向下斜走至鰓蓋下緣，帶後另有一暗褐色斑；吻部不具半月形白斑。背鰭及臀鰭暗褐色，鰭緣為淡藍色；尾鰭淡黃色，內側具白色弧帶；胸鰭灰黑色；尾柄棘溝為黑褐色。

棲息於珊瑚礁或岩礁之浪拂區，棲息深度在1-85公尺左右。成群活動。以絲狀藻為食。

Acanthurus leucopareius is a sub-tropical fish known commonly as the whitebar surgeonfish or the head-band surgeonfish. It is somewhat commercial in fisheries and is used in aquariums. It was first named by Jenkins in 1903.
