Adults inhabit reef flats exposed to waves and intertidal shores (Ref. 90102). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref. 94114). Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters (Ref. 94114).

分布於印度-西太平洋區，包括台灣、印尼、澳洲及密克羅尼西亞等。台灣分布於北部海域。

小型魚類，僅具學術研究價值。

體延長形，稍側扁，似圓柱狀；頭鈍短。頭頂無冠膜；頸鬚、鼻鬚掌狀分支；眼上鬚羽狀分支。上唇全具鋸齒緣，下唇平滑，齒骨具一犬齒。D. XII-XIII, 15-16； A. II, 16-17；P. 14；V. I, 4。背鰭具深缺刻，最後一棘極小，背鰭與尾柄相連，臀鰭不與尾柄相連，在臀鰭棘部與前二軟條各鰭條末端膨大；尾鰭鰭條分叉。 雄魚眼後方有黑斜線，上唇與吻間有間隔黑白色橫紋，頭下方具Λ形紋，體側有6對不明顯的暗橫帶；背鰭棘部有黑白斑，軟條部具斜或不規則的暗線及白線；臀鰭黑色，鰭緣白色；尾鰭有3-4條黑色帶；胸鰭灰黑色，基部有黑帶；腹鰭灰黑色；雌魚同雄魚，但色帶較淡。

主要棲息於珊瑚礁的浪拂區緣，以藻類、碎屑和小型無脊椎動物為食。
