Males resemble S. bowersi but differs in that the tan area of S. bowersi does not extend as far back as the anal fin (Ref. 1602). Initial phase has a distinctive black spot at front of the anal fin and yellowish tail and soft dorsal fin.

Scarus javanicus Bleeker

Scarus javanicus Bleeker, 1854, p. 198.

Characterized by having 4 median predorsal scales, 3 rows of scales on cheek with 1 or 2 scales in ventral row, ii,12 pectoral rays, lips not fully covering white or yellowish teeth, black spot at upper base of pectoral fin. Body abruptly paler behind a vertical line at or near anal origin; pale crossbar may occur on chin; basal two-thirds to three-fourths of anal fin dusky, distal one-third blue when alive; red streaks radiate from eye, some across interorbital space.

Xanothon fowleri Smith, 1956 (p. 5, pl. 42G), is transferred from this species to S. taeniurus.

RANGE.—Western Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.

描述

體延長而略側扁。頭部輪廓呈平滑的弧型。後鼻孔並不明顯的大於前鼻孔。齒板之外表面平滑,上齒板幾被上唇所覆蓋;每一上咽骨具1列臼齒狀之咽頭齒。背鰭前中線鱗約4;頰鱗3列。胸鰭具14軟條。尾鰭於幼魚為截形,成魚微凹或截形,大成魚半月形。初期階段(IP, Initial phase)的雌魚體色灰褐色至淡綠色,鱗片具暗緣;背鰭軟條部、尾柄及尾鰭鮮黃色;臀鰭前部具一個黑色斑塊。終期階段(TP, Terminal phase)的雄魚體呈暗藍綠色;鱗片具橘黃色緣;頭之背側散佈有橘黃色短紋,另沿著眼部下方具一橘黃色上下緣之寬深藍綠色縱紋;眼後方有一大形三角形之橘黃色區塊,大約分佈於眼後至臀鰭後半部水平範圍內;背鰭為藍綠色,具2列長形黃橘色條紋;臀鰭為藍綠色,於其基部有一黃色寬線條;尾鰭亦為藍綠色,上下葉各具一條橘黃色縱紋。
