Body dark reddish brown with edges of scales narrowly darker brown; black spot in axil and upper half of pectoral fin base. Body depth, 2-2.3 in SL. Preorbital width above end of maxilla 1/2 or more orbit diameter; margin of suborbital and posterior margin of preopercle strongly serrated. Suborbital scaled; scales on snout extending slightly anterior to nostrils. Tubed lateral line scales 19-20 (Ref. 39287).

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).

分布於印度-太平洋區，由紅海及東非岸邊至萊恩及社會群島，北至琉球及博寧群島，南至新加勒多尼亞及東加。台灣發現於南部及西南部。

中小型之雀鯛，可食用，一般不為漁獲對象魚。有人將其作觀賞魚之用。

體呈橢圓形而側扁，標準體長為體高之1.9-2.0倍。吻短而鈍圓。眶前骨-眶下骨的區域寬，其寬長大於眼徑長。口中型；頜齒單列，小而呈圓錐狀。眶下骨裸出，下緣具鋸齒；前鰓蓋骨後緣具鋸齒；下鰓蓋骨後緣無鋸齒。體被櫛鱗；背前鱗延伸至鼻孔；側線之有孔鱗片17-19個；側線與背鰭硬棘中央間有鱗列1.5；胸鰭基部內面不被鱗。背鰭單一，軟條部不延長而略呈角形，硬棘XII，軟條14-16；臀鰭硬棘II，軟條12-14；胸鰭鰭條18-19；尾鰭叉形，上下葉末端角形。稚魚時，體呈淡黃褐色，背鰭基底後面上有淡紫色的小斑點，隨著成長而擴散為黑色斑塊。成魚時，黑色斑塊消失，體色亦轉呈淺灰褐色至黑色，體背側尤暗色；體側的鱗片輪廓亦較深色；在頭部、體側與鰭鞘上的鱗片中央具藍色小斑點；眶下區的鱗片大部份為藍灰色。

主要棲息於具有死的鹿角珊瑚的珊瑚礁區，以捕食被這些死珊瑚支撐的絲狀藻。具有領域性，時常襲擊入侵的人類，在與侵略者遭遇的時候會發出一個卡嗒聲，有時會非預期的咬下令人疼痛一口，但那是溫和的警告，尤其是在生殖的期間特別具有侵略性。對於大多數的食草性魚類與一些其他的魚，為攝取食物的利益以及防護它的領土而表現出侵略性。

A territorial species commonly found in coral reef areas with dead staghorn corals. Feeds on filamentous algae supported by these dead corals. Frequently charge human intruders without hesitation, sometimes taking painful nips which are mildly alarming when unexpected. Particularly aggressive during reproductive periods. Emit a clicking noise during aggressive encounters.
