Head large, broadly expanded laterally; rostral process long and flattened; filamentous barbel long, extending to dorsal-fin origin. Reddish, edge of dorsal fin black (Ref. 9771).

分布於西太平洋區，包括臺灣、日本、班達海與新加勒多尼亞。臺灣分布於東北部海域。

一般以拖網漁船捕獲較多，因身上附骨板，適合煮湯，多與豆醬同煮；或充作下雜魚、魚粉等用途。全年均可捕獲。

體延長，前部稍平扁，後部漸細。頭部扁平，邊緣近平直，由上往下看近三角形。吻突細長，但不及左右吻突基底長，且前端微向內彎。上頜有一絨毛狀的齒帶，下頜則無齒。下頜有觸鬚，最長的一根延伸至鰓藍的後部。前鰓蓋棘尖銳且堅硬，較鰓蓋棘為長。體被骨板狀鱗，側線鱗數34。背鰭具硬棘VII，軟條20-21；臀鰭軟條20-21。體呈橘紅色；背鰭具黑緣。有些學者將本種魚列入黃魴鮄科(Peristedidae)。

主要棲息於砂泥底水域。
