Body color brownish to purplish red; head primarily red; upper part of opercular membrane blackish; each scale with vertical silvery white line. Four to five oblique scale rows on cheek; body depth 2.3-2.7 in SL; head length (HL) 2.4-2.85 in SL; snout length 3.75-4.35 in HL; maxilla extending posteriorly from below front of pupil to below center of the eye, upper jaw length 2.7-2.85 in HL; premaxillary groove about a vertical at front edge of orbit; anterior end of nasal bone with 2 diverging spines; medial margin of nasal bone spineless (however, a Seychelles specimen 20.6 cm has one small spinule on the edge); 1-3 spinules on anterior and posterior margins of nasal fossa; suborbital bones' upper edge smooth anteriorly, becoming slightly serrate posteriorly (serrae as recumbent spinules); adults' preopercular spines long, 2.85-3.8 in HL (at least equal to orbit diameter). 2 opercular spines with the lower nearly as long or equal to the upper spine; 4th dorsal spine longest, .5-2.95 in HL; membranes of spinous dorsal fin not incised; 3rd anal spine 1.5-1.7 in HL (Ref. 27370). Has a high body similar to S. spiniferum, but differs in coloration and does not get as large.

Sargocentron violaceum (Bleeker, 1853) è un pesce osseo marino appartenente alla famiglia Holocentridae[2].

Distribuzione e habitat

S. violaceum è distribuito nell'Indo-Pacifico dalle Comore, le Seychelles e le Maldive a ovest alle isole della Società, a nord fino alle Ryūkyū e a sud fino alla grande barriera corallina australiana[1][3][4]. È una specie complessivamente poco comune dappertutto[1].

Vive nelle barriere coralline in aree con una grande crescita di coralli, in ambienti vari[1][3][4].

La distribuzione batimetrica va da 1 a 30 metri, di solito al di sopra di 15 metri[3].

Descrizione

L'aspetto di questa specie è simile a quello di Sargocentron spiniferum, da cui è distinguibile per la colorazione molto diversa e per la taglia inferiore. La livrea del corpo è rosso violacea o bruno violacea con una linea chiara argentea verticale su ogni scaglia e la testa rossa. La parte alta del bordo dell'opercolo branchiale ha una barra subverticale rossa. La parte spinosa della pinna dorsale è violacea, le altre pinne sono trasparenti con riflessi viola[3][4]. La spina sul preopercolo è velenifera[3].

Raggiunge eccezionalmente i 45 cm di lunghezza massima[3], comunemente non supera i 25 cm[4].

Biologia

Comportamento

È notturno come tutti gli Holocentridae, passa il giorno nascosto in angusti rifugi. È una specie solitaria e diffidente, difficile da avvistare[1][3][4].

Alimentazione

Si nutre di crostacei bentonici e piccoli pesci[5].

Pesca

Questa specie non è soggetta a pesca[1].

Conservazione

Sebbene si tratti di una specie non comune è distribuita su un ampio areale e non sembra soggetta ad impatti antropici. Per questo la lista rossa IUCN la classifica come "a rischio minimo"[1].
