Spiny Grenadier

Snout long and pointed, its anterolateral margin completely supported by bone; the dorsal surface of the snout completely scaled. Head ridges strong, spiny, supraoccipital and post-temporal ridges developed; the underside of the head, including the mandibular rami, covered with scales having a single spinous ridge. Light organ barely visible externally as a black crescent before the anus. Overall color is brownish to grayish; the fins are dusky to black; the mouth bluish-gray; the gill cavity blackish.

分布於印度-西太平洋區，由日本、臺灣至澳洲及紐西蘭等海域。臺灣分布於南部海域。

個體較大型，軀幹部份可食。小型個體則作為下雜魚。

體型延長，側扁。體呈頭大尾小之延長狀，軀幹部份為圓錐形，愈往後愈尖細；頭部腹面完全被鱗，眼大呈長橢圓形，口小，下位可突出吻長而尖，吻端有一硬棘。齒為錐狀，數列排成齒帶。體被大而薄的櫛鱗，鱗片上之棘刺甚強，排列成平行狀，約4-6列，中央一列的棘刺擴大成三角形狀。腹部之發光器短小，位於肛門前方之黑色區域。體為淡棕色。

主要棲息於650-990公尺深的水域，深海底棲性，在泥砂底質之海床上覓食小型蝦蟹。
