Head large, completely scaled except for the exposed posterior end of the preopercle and gill membranes. Snout short, bluntly pointed. No suborbital ridge developed; scales spinules numerous, small, sharp, conical, in irregularly divergent to roughly quincunx pattern. Pyloric caeca 12 to 16. Overall color is brown or grayish brown; fins somewhat darker.
