Bathygadus nipponicus (Jordan & Gilbert 1904)

Head moderately wide, longer than 1/2 length to vent. Snout low, broad, longer than or as long as orbit; width at frontal margin of orbit much narrower than preocular length. Orbit large. Mouth terminal and lateral, no chin barbel. Teeth minute, rather conical in shape, set in broad band on premaxillary and in narrow band on dentary. Scales cycloid. Mandibular ramus with double scale rows (Ref. 54421).

分布於西北太平洋區，包括日本南方、中國東海及臺灣東北部等。

罕見的種類，雖可食用但數量極少，經濟價值低。漁民以拖網船捕獲後，多充當下雜魚，打碎後作為養殖魚類的餌料。

軀幹短；尾部側扁甚延長，愈近末端愈纖細；無尾鰭。頭部寬大。吻部鈍圓。眼大；標準體長為頭長之3.3倍。口很大，端位，頤部無鬚；齒細小呈珠粒狀，多列排成寬齒帶。體被圓鱗具有次生棘，易脫落，下頜有大型鱗片2列，排成拱型，喉峽部前半有鱗分布，後半部裸出。二背鰭間距甚窄只餘一縫隙。無發光器。體為淺棕色，各鰭有漸層變化之黑色。

主要棲息於350-700公尺之大陸棚水域，深海底棲性，緩慢游動於泥砂底質的海床上覓食小型蝦蟹。

Bathygadus nipponicus is a species of rattail. This is a deep-water fish found in the waters around southern Japan and northern Taiwan.

This species grows to around 57 cm (22.4 in) in length. It has a fairly wide mouth with a low, broad snout, large eyes and no chin barbel. The mouth is terminal with very small, conical teeth.
