粗鰭魚的外觀形質與石川氏粗鰭魚(Trachipterus
ishikawae)非常相似,僅能從前者頭背部較為陡直的輪廓來區分,後者則為較為平直,由於模式標本已遺失,所以二者間之分類關係仍待研究。生活時,體背側鐵灰藍色,腹側粉紅色;死後體色逐漸變灰白色,甚至淡白色。上下頜及各鰭為鮮紅色;眼睛周圍金黃色。體長最大可達270公分左右。臺灣各海域有產。
