Tooth-plate on tongue and tooth plate behind it (basihyal and basibranchials tooth plates) broad, their width about 3 to 5 times in their combined length, the basibranchial tooth plate with a distinct bulge in front. Scales fairly strongly attached, not easily lost. No dark pigment on dorsal fin tip (Ref. 188). Silvery, with a dark greenish back. Diffuse yellow or pale orange spot at edge of opercle. Body slender, lower profile not strongly curved (Ref. 7251).

Descripció
- Pot arribar a fer 18 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 10).
- Cos esvelt.
- 15-21 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 12-23 a l'anal.
- És platejat amb el llom de color verd fosc.[6][7][8][9]
Depredadors
És depredat per Caranx ruber, Scomberomorus regalis, el mero de Nassau (Epinephelus striatus) i la barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda).[10]
Hàbitat
És un peix marí i d'aigua salabrosa, associat als esculls[11] i de clima subtropical (31°N-7°S, 99°W-47°W) que viu entre 0-50 m de fondària.[6][12]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba a l'Atlàntic occidental: des del golf de Mèxic i el sud-est de Florida fins al nord del Brasil, incloent-hi les Bahames,[13] el mar Carib sencer i les Índies Occidentals.[6][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]
Ús comercial
La seua carn té una olor desagradable i és emprada per a elaborar farina de peix.[34]
Observacions
És inofensiu per als humans.[6]
