Head and trunk short, about 1.6-1.7 times in tail. Eyes small and covered with semitransparent membrane. Dorsal fin originates much behind the pectoral tip; dorsal and anal fins very low without any spots. Preoperculomandibular pores 5 + 2. Vertebrae 178-184 (Ref. 40862). Differs to O. aphotistos in having more vertebrae, 178-184 and 2 distinct papillae on the upper lip which is absent in aphotistos (Ref. 40865).

Ophichthus rotundus is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).[1] It was described by Chung-Lyul Lee and Hirotoshi Asano in 1997.[2] It is a marine, temperate water-dwelling eel which is known from Korea, in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Males can reach a maximum total length of 79.3 centimeters (31.2 in).[1]
