Taxon Biology

provided by Echinoderms of Panama

Encope tetrapora L. Agassiz, 1841 is not a good species and should not be considered a subspecies of E. micropora. This species was erected on the basis of the posterior lunules being open (notched) rather than closed as in typical E. micropora. However, this character varies within members of a population of E. micropora, with a few individuals sometimes having one or both posterior lunules open (a similar situation also occurs among E. emarginata in the Caribbean).
