Jaydia novaeguineae (Valenciennes 1832)

Mouthbrooders (Ref. 240). Distinct pairing during courtship and spawning (Ref. 205).

Feeds on planktonic and benthic organisms (Ref. 26100). Exhibits the black gut phenomenon. In nocturnal predators, it appears to serve to conceal bioluminiscent prey in the stomach cavity (Ref. 46685).

Usually lives on sand bottom in shallow waters from depths of 22-62 m. Trawled specimens werecollected from 40-55 m on an open sandy area (Ref. 99978).
