The morningbird (Pachycephala tenebrosa) is a songbird species in the family Pachycephalidae.

Taxonomy and systematics

The morningbird was previously placed in the genus Colluricincla until 2013, when it was transferred to Pachycephala.^[2][a] Some authorities have placed the morningbird in the genus Pitohui and it is sometimes placed in its own monotypic genus, Malacolestes. Alternate names for the morningbird include the brown pitohui, morning pitohui, morning whistler, Palau morningbird and Palau pitohui.

Distribution and habitat

The morningbird is endemic to the islands of Babeldaob, Koror, Ngercheu, Peleliu and Ngebad in Palau. Its natural habitat is deep primary tropical moist lowland forests. The species is non-migratory. It is apparently commoner on the smaller islands in its range.

Behaviour and ecology

Morningbirds feed principally on insects, but also take snails, berries, fruit and seeds. They feed on or around the ground.

El picanzo de Palau es endémico de las islas Babelthuap, Koror, Garakayo, Peleliu y Ngabad del archipiélago de Palaos. Su hábitat natural son los bosques primarios tropicales isleños. Es más abundante en las islas más pequeñas de su área de distribución.

Pachycephala tenebrosa (anciennement Colluricincla tenebrosa) est une espèce de passereaux de la famille des Pachycephalidae.

L'espèce est sédentaire. Elle est apparemment plus fréquente sur les îles les plus petites de son territoire.

Alimentation

Cet oiseau se nourrit principalement d'insectes, mais aussi d'escargots, de baies, de fruits et de graines. Il se nourrit sur le sol ou à proximité.

Répartition

Cet oiseau se trouve sur les îles de Babelthuap, Koror, Garakayo, Peleliu et Ngabad aux Palaos.

Habitat

Il habite les forêts profondes primaires tropicales humides.

Taxinomie

Les travaux de Dumbacher et al. (2008), Norman et al. (2009) et Jønsson et al. (2010), entérinés dans la classification taxinomique (version 3.4, 2013) du Congrès ornithologique international, montrent que cette espèce appartient au genre Pachycephala et non au genre Colluricincla où elle était précédemment placée. Quand elle appartenait au genre Colluricincla, son nom normalisé CINFO était Pitohui des Palau.

Avec ce changement de genre, l'espèce Pitohui ombré reprend son nom scientifique de Colluricincla tenebrosa.

Loài này trong quá khứ từng được xếp trong các chi Rectes (danh pháp gốc Rectes tenebrosus Hartlaub & Finsch, 1868), Pitohui, Malacolestes, Colluricincla.^[2][3][4] Khi nó được xếp trong chi Colluricincla thì danh pháp Colluricincla tenebrosa (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1868) của nó có độ ưu tiên cao hơn danh pháp Colluricincla tenebrosa (Rothschild, 1911) (loài mô tả tại bài Colluricincla tenebrosa) nên danh pháp Colluricincla umbrina (Reichenow, 1915) khi đó được chọn làm danh pháp chính thức thay vì C. tenebrosa.
