Previously mistaken for Ceriops decandra, this Ceriops species can be found along the west coast of West Malaysia, Thailand (Gulf of Thailand side), South Vietnam, Philippines, and Indonesia (Bintan, Lombok, Java).

A key diagnostic feature to identify Bruguiera hainesii is that the calyx lobes are perpendicular (90 degrees) to the propagule. Secondly, the pinkish-coloured calyx, distinguishes Bruguiera hainesii from the red-coloured and common Bruguiera gymnorhiza.
