A espécie foi descrita cientificamente pelo explorador e naturalista sueco Carl Peter Thunberg em 1784, e originalmente colocada no gênero Sphex.[2]
Fora a subespécie-padrão (P. coronatus coronatus), são reconhecidas mais duas subespécies:[2]
