Cells ellipsoidal, spherical or cylindrical; protoplast separated from the cell wall; cell wall of variable thickness, papilla rare, sometimes posteriorly pointed; space between cell wall and protoplast filled with gelatinous material; 2 equal flagella; chloroplast parietal or cup-shaped, sometimes H-shaped; pyrenoids present or absent; eyespot usually present, sometimes absent; nucleus centrally located; two (rarely four) anteriorly located contractile vacuoles; asexual reproduction by 4 zoospores; sexual reproduction isogamous (known in only few taxa); resting stages present.
