Neotibicen lyricen (formerly Tibicen lyricen; see Hill et al. 2015) currently has three described subspecies. All three are found in the eastern deciduous forest ecosystems of the United States. Neotibicen lyricen lyricen has the largest range, with N. lyricen engelhardti (a very dark form) being surrounded by N. lyricen lyricen along the Appalachian Mountains and areas west of the mountains and N. lyricen virescens (a greener form) occurring in the southeastern states (mainly Florida). Neotibicen lyricen lyricen and N. lyricen virescens are found in all Florida ecoregions, with representatives collected in the Miami Ridge/Atlantic Coastal Strip of the Southern Florida Coastal Plain ecoregion within Florida. Neotibicen lyricen lyricen has been associated with oaks (Quercus spp.), forests that contain maple (Acer spp.) and beeches (Fagus grandifolia Ehrhart) [45], persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.), oaks, and peach (Prunus persica (L.) Stokes). The song of all three described subspecies is a watery, resonant drone (Hill et al. 2015). Based on the significant overlap between N. lyricen lyricen and T. lyricen virescens Sanborn & Phillips (2013) suggested that further work should be performed to determine the status of these subspecies.
