Telmatobius atahualpai occur in humid subalpine páramo where these frogs live under rocks at the edge of small streams. Threats to this little known species are not well known.[1]

Telmatobius atahualpai est une espèce d'amphibiens de la famille des Telmatobiidae[1].
Cette espèce est endémique du Pérou. Elle se rencontre entre 2 600 et 4 000 m d'altitude dans la Cordillère Blanche dans les régions d'Amazonas et de San Martín[1].
L'holotype de Telmatobius atahualpai[2] mesure 43 mm. Son dos est pratiquement noir avec des stries et mouchetures vert métallique. Sa face ventrale est uniformément gris foncé.
Son nom d'espèce, atahualpai, lui a été donné l'honneur d'Atahualpa, le dernier empereur de l'empire inca indépendant.

Telmatobius atahualpai is endemisch in Peru en komt voor aan de westkant van de Cordillera Blanca. Omdat de ontdekking van de soort nog vrij recent is, kan het verspreidingsgebied echter groter zijn. De soort is gezien op hoogtes van 3400 tot 3600 meter boven zeeniveau.[3]
