A small or medium-sized tree; leaves 8-16 cm. long, the petioles and rachis subterete or slightly grooved above, puberulent when young; leaflets 4-S, opposite, elliptic or somewhat elliptic-obovate, 12-20 cm. long, 5-10 cm. broad, abruptly and obtusely short-acuminate at the apex, rounded or somewhat acutish at the base, short-petioluled, glabrous on both surfaces, coriaceous; secondary veins obsolete; panicle axillary, the branches more or less ridged, puberulous; flowers short-pedicelled; calyx open-campanulate, puberulent, early breaking away at the base of the inflated portion and falling as a collar over the pedicel, not persisting on the capsule, the lobes obtuse; petals oblong, 8.5-9 mm. long, 2.5-3 mm. broad, subcoriaceous, acute; staminal tube subovate-cylindric, puberulent, the margin subentire; anthers oblong; ovary slightly ribbed, glabrous; style shorter than the ovary, glabrous, early deciduous; capsule subpyriform or ellipsoid, about 3-3.5 cm. long, 2-2.5 cm. broad, glabrous. .
Type locality: French Guiana.
Distribution: Martinique; Panama; also in South America.
