Wet and dry sclerophyll forest and inundated grassy areas. Usually found in moist areas under rocks, logs, dead grass and debris.Breeds in late summer, autumn and early winter. Eggs are deposited on damp soil in tunnels and an adult usually remains with the eggs. Tadpoles emerge at an advanced stage of development when the tunnels are flooded. Development is 3 – 7 months.

Its natural habitats are temperate forests, temperate shrubland, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, intermittent rivers, swamps, intermittent freshwater marshes, arable land, and pastureland.
