에티오피아늑대(Canis simensis)는 에티오피아 고원에서 발견되는 개과포유류의 일종이다. 크기와 체격이 코요테와 비슷하며, 길고 좁은 두개골은 차이가 있고 붉고 흰 모피를 갖고 있다.^[5] 대부분의 대형 개과 동물이 널리 분포하는 일반종인 것과는 달리, 에티오피아늑대는 고도의 전문종으로 아주 특수한 서식 조건 속에서 아프리카 산지 설치류를 먹이로 섭취한다.^[6] 세계에서 가장 희귀한 개과 동물의 하나로 아프리카에서 가장 멸종 위험이 높은 식육동물이다.^[7]

현재 에티오피아늑대는 고도 3,000~4,500m 높이 지역에서 7곳의 고립된 산악 지역에 제한적으로 분포하고 2011년 현재 성체 개체수가 전체 360~440마리로 추산되고 있으며, 그 중의 절반 정도 이상이 베일 산맥에서 발견된다.^[2] 에티오피아늑대는 적은 개체수와 파편적인 서식지 분포때문에 국제 자연 보전 연맹(IUCN)이 멸종위기종으로 분류하고 있다.
