Description

provided by AmphibiaWeb articles
Pristimantis maculosus ranges in SVL from 17.8-19.2 mm (three males) and 23.8-26.3 mm (two females). Pristimantis maculosus has the following combination of characters: skin of dorsum is smooth except for low pustules in dark markings; no dorsolateral folds; venter areolate; tympanum visible; snout short and subacuminate in dorsal view and round in lateral view; interorbital space broader than upper eyelid; eyelid with small warts; no cranial crests; vomerine odontophores small and low; males with vocal slits and nuptial pads; first finger shorter than second; discs moderate sized with largest on the outer fingers; fingers have lateral keels; small ulnar tubercles present; two metatarsal tubercles, inner oval, three times size of outer, many supernumerary plantar tubercles; toes bearing lateral keels. Dark brown above and below, flanks and concealed limb surfaces black with large pale spots. Spots white in life. The head is narrower than the body and wider than long. Skin of upper eyelid rugose with one slightly larger more conical wart toward margin of eyelid. Tympanum superficial, annulus distinct and separated from eye by distance equal to tympanum length. Pristimantis maculosus resembles P. scoloblepharus in having pale spots in the groin. But they differ in that P. maculosus lacks the conical tubercles on the upper eyelids and has a shorter snout.

Pristimantis maculosus

provided by wikipedia EN

Pristimantis maculosus is a species of frog in the family Strabomantidae. It is endemic to Colombia and is only known from a few localities in the Cordillera Central in Caldas, Antioquia,[3][4] and Quindío Departments.[1] The specific name maculosus is Latin for "dappled" or "spotted" and refers to the pale spots on the hidden surfaces of this species.[2] Common name spotted robber frog has been coined for it.[3]

Description

Adult males measure 18–19 mm (0.71–0.75 in) and adult females 24–26 mm (0.94–1.02 in) in snout–vent length. The head is narrower than the body. The snout is subacuminate in dorsal view and rounded in lateral view. The canthus rostralis and supra-tympanic fold are evident, the latter obscuring upper edge of tympanum. The fingers and toes bear fleshy lateral keels and rounded discs; toe discs are slightly smaller than those on fingers. Dorsal skin bears some scattered pustules. The dorsum is dark olive-brown to dark brow and has brown markings. The venter is bronze-brown to black. The flanks and the concealed parts of the limbs are black with white spots.[2]

Habitat and conservation

Pristimantis maculosus occurs in primary forests at elevations from 2,000 m (6,600 ft)[4] or 2,560 m (8,400 ft)[1] to 2,900 m (9,500 ft) above sea level.[1][4] Individuals have been found on leaves and branches on high or medium strata.[1] The type series was collected from low vegetation (about 0.3 m (1 ft) above the ground) along streams.[2]

Pristimantis maculosus is a rare species that has been recorded only in one locality post-2010. It is threatened by habitat loss (deforestation) caused by logging and agriculture. It has been recently recorded in the Río Blanco Forest Reserve, and its range overlaps with the Selva de Florencia National Natural Park.[1]
