Substratum: soil.Place: Adriatic Sea, island Olib, south shore of Slatina bay, Zadar archipelago, Zadar region, Croatia EC. Comment: Vincetoxicum hirundinaria ssp. adriaticum is an endemic, endangered and fully protected plant in Croatia. It grows only along east shore of the Adriatic Sea, on Adriatic Islands, in Velebit and Biokovo mountains, in Bosnia and Hercegovina and in some parts of south Italy. Nikoli et al. (2014) (Ref.:1.) claims its presence also for Slovenia, but Martini et al. (2007) (Ref.:2.) disagree with this, or at least, doesn't list the taxon in the Slovenian flora. The presence of this species on island Olib was confirmed by Milovi et al. in the first scientific survey of the island's flora in 2016 (Ref.5.).The plants in genus Vincetoxicum are poisonous since they contain different glycosides. Yet, they have been used in popular medicine for centuries. It was considered a detox for all kind of toxins, hence its Latin name 'Vince-toxicum' 'vincere' means to defeat in Latin. Nowadays the plants are not in use anymore because it is too risky. Any overdose can result in serious medical problems including death in the extreme cases.Ref.:(1) T. Nikoli, M. Milovi, S. Cynanchum rossicum is a flowering plant of the milkweed family, Apocynaceae. It is a perennial herb native to southern Europe. It has several common names including Swallowwort, Pale Swallowwort, and in some areas as Dog-strangling Vine. The taxon name comes from Greek kynos (meaning "dog") and anchein ("to choke"), hence the common name for several species is Dog-strangling Vine.It is a twining vine that grows to heights of 60200 cm (2.06.6 ft). The glossy, dark green leaves grow opposite on the stem and are ovate to elliptical. The flowers appear near the top of the plant and grow on stalks that come from the leaf axils. Each stalk has 5 to 20 flowers. The flowers are dark purple or dark brown. After a year of growth, the stem turns light brown and resembles a decaying stem and stops growing, yet it remains to cling onto the plant. The plant spreads its seeds by wind dispersal.C. rossicum is a highly invasive plant growing in all of the Eastern United States, and commonly found in the mid west. It is also found in Southern Ontario. It is commonly found along with poison ivy plants.

A plant bought at Beeches nursery last summer and still very small. I'm always curious about the hardy and nearly hardy Apocynaceae (Amsonia, Asclepias, Vincetoxicum, Periploca, Dregea, Cionura, Metaplexis, Cycladenia, Apocynum, Matelea...) With very few exceptions they tend to be a bit obscure and are little grown in the UK. Some of course are quite tender. This Chinese species looks like being an interesting one.
