The left panel shows a view with transmitted light and the right with epifluoresence which shows the chloprophyll fluoresencse (red & orange) of the algae it ate.

Salpingella acuminata. A normal and presumptive parasite stages - apparently ate something transformative. Specimens from the Canadaian Basin (Arctic).

The species was described by Haeckel in 1873 based on specimens collected from off Messina, Italy. The specimen shown appears to have cococcoliths on the lorica.

Specimen from the Eastern Med

This specimen stuck a variety of different coccoliths and the 'shell' of a dinoflagellate (Thoracosphaera heimii) on its lorica. The species of coccolithophores and the dinoflagellate were identified by Jeremy Young. The specimen from the Bay of Villefranche was collected by Charles Bachy and the SEM done at the Institut de Minéralogie et de Physique des Milieux Condensés, Université Paris 6.

Lugol's-fixed specimen from the Ionian Sea

The type species of the genus Ptychocylis is P. urnula described originally by Claparède & Lachmann as Tintinnus urnula in 1858. Lorica dimensions given as averaging 140 µm in length and 100 µm in diameter.

Cymatocylis affinis/convallaria. Specimen was not well-preserved but the lorica characteristics are apparent.
