Prorocentrum bimaculatum is a species of benthic, marine dinoflagellate found in sediments near Kuwait. While this species has not been tested for production of the toxin okadaic acid, it is closely related to other Prorocentrum species that do and should be investigated.

Diagnostic Description

Unicellular and photosynthetic organism, oval in shape. Length: 49.9–55.3 μm; width: 38.4–43.2 μm. Nucleus roughly chestnut-shaped, located in medio-posterior part of the cell. Valves smooth with scattered pores, except in two circular areas of 15 μm in diameter, located on both sides of the valves center. Marginal pores present on both valves. Pore size: 0.32–0.50 μm. Right valve with a moderate excavation at the apex; left valve with a short apical ridge. Periflagellar area composed of nine platelets; some platelets overlapping others and being only partially visible. Flagellar pore oval. Accessory pore oval but hidden in apical view. Intercalary band smooth.
