Usually considered a subspecies of B. exilis (Scott 1986), this Antillean butterfly is believed to connect western N. American B. exilis exilis populations and eastern N. American B. exilis pseudofea populations (Scott 1986). Habitats are LOWER-ALTITUDE ALKALINE AREAS INCLUDING SALT MARSH, DESERT, PRAIRIE, WASTELAND, MOSTLY ALONG THE COAST. Host plants are can be shrubs or herbs and include many species, but mostly in one family (CHENOPODIACEAE). Eggs are laid on the host plant singly. Individuals overwinter as pupae. There are multiple flight(s) each year with the approximate flight time MAR1-DEC1 and year round in Fla. (Scott 1986).

Brephidium is a genus of butterflies in the family Lycaenidae.[1] They are known commonly as pygmy blues. The species of this genus have a disjunct distribution. Two of the three species are found in the Americas while the third is found in Africa.

Species

The following three species are in the genus Brephidium:[2][1][3][4]

  • Brephidium exilis (Boisduval, 1852) – western pygmy blue (southern United States to South America)
  • Brephidium metophis (Wallengren, 1860) – South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe
  • Brephidium pseudofea (Morrison, 1873) – eastern pygmy blue (southeastern United States)
