Lorica funnel-shaped, constructed of rod-shaped or flattened costal strips; lorica chamber formed by spiral of costae and up to 17 spiny anterior projections; posteriorly, lorica may be sessile or with aggregated pedicel; division nudiform; marine and brackish, in particular undisturbed seawater in rockpools or on salt marshes; similar genera - Polyoeca Kent has non-spiralling costae and can form colonies.
