Colonies. Comprising ascomata singly or in groups in or on wood. Anamorph. Not observed. Ascomata. Subglobose, immersed or superficial, ostiolate, papillate, dark brown, gray, brownish to almost colourless, (75-) 100-340 μm high, 100-360 μm diam., with a wall 15-25 μm thick composed of two layers; outer layer comprising subglobose, thick-walled cells with small lumina; inner layer comprising elongate, thick-walled cells with larger lumina; ostiolar neck cylindrical, up to 225 μm long 18-32 μm diam., the ostiolar canal at first filled with small, thin-walled cells forming a textura globulosa. Asci. Developing from the inner wall of the ascomatal lower half, eight-spored, clavate or oblong-ellipsoidal, sessile or short-stalked, thin-walled, with only one functional wall layer visible with the light microscope, 103-180 × 12-16 μm, with no apical apparatus, rapidly becoming increasingly hard to see. Ascospores. Colourless, cylindrical or clavate, broader at the apex, 3-septate rarely with more septa, not or slightly narrower at the septa, 30.5-52 × 4-5 μm excluding appendages; appendages numbering three or four, rarely five, radiating from the spore's lower end, semirigid, straight or slightly curved, with a thick base, 19-39.5 × 1.5-4.5 μm, tapering toward the apex, with a skeleton of parallel fibrils observable with the electron microscope and sometimes also the light microscope. Paraphyses. Septate, growing irregularly throughout the ascomatal venter, 0.7-1.3 μm diam.
