Distinguishable by its sharp keel between the base of the pelvic fins and the anus; 42-46+1-2 lateral line scales (Ref. 27732); 11-14 1/2 branched anal rays (Ref. 43281).

Inhabits upper reaches of large streams, with moderately swift current (Ref. 43281).

Hemiculterella macrolepis is a species of cyprinid in the genus Hemiculterella. It is found in Laos and in the Mekong in the Yunnan province of China. Its maximum length is 13.5 centimetres (5.3 in).
