Diagnosis: parietal fontanella always present, even in adults; precaudal spot ovoid, anteriorly pointed and not extending unto caudal-fin rays; 5.5 scales between lateral line and dorsal fin; 26-30 lateral line scales; 19-21 anal fin branched rays; 6/8 premaxillary teeth; 12-15 gill rakers on lower limb of first gill arch (Ref. 2880, 81279). Description: dorsal-fin origin at about same level as pelvic-fin insertions; anal fin with 3 branched and 19-21 unbranched rays; jaws equal; 6 outer premaxillary teeth aligned in single row; sexual dimorphism affecting the anal-fin shape in adult males, which also have dorsal-fin rays prolonged into long filament extending beyond adipose fin when pressed to body (Ref. 2880, 81279). Colouration: sides silvery and fins colourless, except for dorsal fin which is wine-red in adult males; body with dark humeral spot (Ref. 2880, 81279).
