Distinguished from its congeners by its unique cheeks covered by several rows of scales. Differs further from other species of the genus by the combination of the following characters: first dorsal fin with 7-10 spines; second dorsal fin with 1-2 simple and 9-11½ branched rays; and 70-85 + 4-7 scales along the lateral line (Ref. 59043).
