Adults inhabit slow flowing, often turbid waters over mud or gravel bottoms. Feed primarily on algae (Ref. 5259, 44894). Small mouth equipped with rows of flattened teeth is suited fro scraping algae off rocks, wood and bottom litter (Ref. 44894). Eggs are guarded and fanned by the male parent (Ref. 205). Aquarium conditions: pH=7, H=8, 26°C water temperature, egg layer, peaceful community fish requiring rock and plant cover (Ref. 6398). Not much is known of the biology (Ref. 2906).

Gilbert's grunter (Pingalla gilberti) is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish, a grunter from the family Terapontidae. It is endemic to Australia, where it is known from the Norman, Gilbert, and Flinders Rivers.

This grunter was described by Gilbert Percy Whitley in 1955, the specific name honours the English naturalist and explorer John Gilbert (1812-1845) after whom the type locality of this species, the Gilbert River, is also named.
