Inhabits relatively exposed areas with a mud bottom (Ref. 4983). The specimens which were examined contained fragments of the gastropod, Melanoides tuberculata,in their stomachs and intestines (Ref. 558).

Haplochromis mylergates is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria though it may now be extinct. This species can reach a length of 13.7 centimetres (5.4 in) SL.^[2]
