Description: English: The nares, or nostrils, of the shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus), a freshwater sturgeon native to the United States of America. It is often called "hackleback", "sand sturgeon", or "switchtail." Shovelnose sturgeon are the most abundant sturgeon in North America, and can be found in the Missouri River and Mississippi River systems.
