Leptophis is a genus of colubrid snakes, commonly known as parrot snakes. The species within this genus are widely distributed throughout Mexico, Central and South America.[1]

Description

Snakes of the genus Leptophis are slender with a long tail. The body is cylindrical or slightly laterally compressed. The head is elongated and distinct from the neck. The eye is large with a round pupil. The dorsal scales are arranged in 15 rows at midbody. The maxillary teeth, which number 20–32, are in a continuous series without any interspace, and are longest posteriorly. Conversely, the mandibular teeth are longest anteriorly.[2]

Leptophis est un genre de serpents de la famille des Colubridae[1].

Répartition

Les espèces de ce genre se rencontrent en Amérique centrale et dans le nord de l'Amérique du Sud[1].

Description

Les espèces de ce genre[2] sont des serpents au corps fin avec une longue queue. Leur tête est nettement distincte du cou. Ils se caractérisent par un maxillaire portant entre 18 et 36 dents, augmentant progressivement de taille vers la partie postérieure. Leurs yeux présentent des pupilles rondes et ont un diamètre pratiquement égal à la distance qui les sépare de la narine.

Le genre Leptophis, du grec ancien λεπτός, leptos, « mince », et ὄφις, óphis, « serpent », a été choisi en référence à leur morphologie.

  • Leptophis: gr. λεπτος leptos „smukły”; οφις ophis, οφεως opheōs „wąż”[2].
  • Diplotropis: gr. διπλοος diploos „podwójny”, od δυο duo „dwa”[6]; τροπις tropis, τροπιδος tropidos „kil statku”[7]. Gatunek typowy: Diplotropis bilineata Günther, 1872 (= Philothamnus depressirostris Cope, 1861).
  • Thalerophis: gr. θαλερος thaleros „zielony”[8]; οφις ophis, οφεως opheōs „wąż”[9]. Gatunek typowy: Coluber richardi BOry de Saint Vincent]], 1823 (= Coluber ahaetulla Linnaeus, 1758).
