North American Ecology (US and Canada)

provided by North American Butterfly Knowledge Network
Speyeria nokomis is resident in a patchy distribution to the southwestern United States (Scott 1986). Habitats are upper Sonoran to Canadian zone moist meadows near streams, permanent spring-fed meadows, and seeps. Host plants are restricted to one species, Viola nephrophylla (Violaceae). Eggs are laid haphazardly, near the host plant, singly. Individuals overwinter as unfed first instar larvae. There is one flight each year with the approximate flight time usually late July-Sept. 15, Aug. 15-Sept 15 in the southern part of their range (Scott 1986).
