I found this beetle buzzing low over some mulched wood, which is likely a breeding site. They are easily mistaken for a bee, and I see a few every spring. Length is 16 mm. When handled, all members of this genus "play dead", some for many minutes. I had to keep this one undisturbed for about 15 minutes for it to start crawling about.-BugGuide account--Euphoria inda
This image was created via focus-stacking in Zerene Stacker of 11 photographs of this beautiful beetle. It was playing "dead" through the better part of the photo session, but eventually decided to extend its legs and take a walk. I was able to capture many photos before my son released it back to the wild, unharmed!

Ventral view shows the fuzziness of this beetle--quite remarkable. To me, they look almost like teddy bears.-BugGuide account--Euphoria inda
