Gasteracantha quadrispinosa, the four-spined jewel spider, is a brightly coloured species of spider in the spiny orb-weaver genus Gasteracantha.[2] It occurs in wet forests of Queensland, Australia, and New Guinea,[1][3] where it builds vertical orb webs approximately 1.5 m across and hangs in the centre of the web to wait for prey.[4]
Female four-spined jewel spiders are distinctively shaped and coloured. Their abdomens are flat, oblong, and curved slightly forward, 5-6 mm wide, excluding spines. The corners of the abdomen are armed with short spines, the rear pair slightly longer than the pair in front. Unlike most members of its genus, G. quadrispinosa lacks a third pair of spines on the hind margin of its abdomen, so it is four spined or quadrispinose. The hard, shiny upper surface of the abdomen ranges from red to yellow in colour and is marked with a black spot and dark sigilla.[2][5]

Cette espèce se rencontre en Australie[2] au Queensland[1], en Indonésie en Nouvelle-Guinée occidentale[3] et en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée en Nouvelle-Guinée orientale[4] et dans l'archipel Bismarck[3].
L'abdomen de la femelle mesure de l'ordre de 6 mm dans la direction longitudinale et de l'ordre de 12 mm sans les épines dans la direction transversale[5],[6]. Le mâle n'a pas été décrit[1].
L'abdomen est ovale[2], avec quatre angles[5], de grande dimension transverse[2] d'au moins deux fois la dimension longitudinale[4]. Le bord antérieur est convexe vers l'avant[2]. Le bord postérieur est convexe vers l'arrière. L'abdomen est doté de quatre épines de taille modérée et placées aux quatre coins[2],[4]. Les épines antérieures sont plus petites, plus fines et légèrement orientées vers l'avant[2],[5]. La paire d'épines postérieure est manquante[5]. Les épines latérales (qui sont donc les postérieures) sont orientées transversalement[2],[5]. Les sigilla, au nombre de dix-neuf marginales et quatre centrales[5], sont réparties classiquement symétriquement par rapport à l'axe longitudinal[2]. Dix sigilla ornent le bord antérieur, quatre forment un carré central et neuf sont placées près du bord postérieur[2],[4]. L'abdomen est de couleur jaune-argile[4] à jaune-marron avec les épines et les sigilla plus sombres[2]. Un quadrangle noir central englobe les deux sigilla postérieures du carré central ainsi que les trois sigilla centrales de la ligne marginale postérieure[4],[5].
Les pattes sont courtes, brun foncé à noirâtre avec les fémurs jaunâtres[2].
Le céphalothorax est lisse et strié transversalement[4], de couleur marron foncé à noir profond[2].
Gasteracantha quadrispinosa est assez proche de Gasteracantha mengei[2].
Cette espèce a été décrite par Octavius Pickard-Cambridge en 1879.
