Cells ellipsoidal, ovoid, pear-shaped, sometimes nearly spherical, often with irregular outline caused by extrusions or warts; protoplast separated from the cell wall, space between cell and protoplast filled with gelatinous material; in optical cross-sections cells often not spherical, but angular; protoplast spherical, ellipsoidal or ovoid, structurally similar to Chlamydomonas; two or four (rarely more) contractile vacuoles; asexual reproduction by 2-8 zoospores, released by gelatinization of the parental cell wall; sexual reproduction and resting stages unknown.
