Sideroxylon cartilagineum is a tree of southern Mexico restricted to deciduous or semi-deciduous forests. An example ecoregion of occurrence is in the Jalisco dry forests. The tree is often found on igneous rock based soils.

This species is characterized by unspined twigs and alternate leaves. Flowers are axillary and fascicled, and the calyx 5-lobed. Corolla campanulate, 5-lobed. There are five stamens.
