More or less erect perennial herb, up to 40 cm tall, growing from a dense spreading cluster of fleshy, swollen roots. Leaves mostly basal, more or less erect, linear, up to 30 cm long, covered with spreading hairs, particularly near the base. Flowers in terminal or pseudo-axillary clusters held in a fleshy leaf-like bract; tepals pink, mauve or blue; stamens embedded in dense blue hairs.
