Herbs, annual, cespitose. Culms 1–10(–25), roundly trigonous, 3–12 cm × 0.3–0.8 mm, glabrous. Leaves 1–3–(4), 1–6 cm × 1(–1.5) mm. Inflorescences: if rays absent heads single, dense, sessile, digitate, 5–20 × 10–30 mm, single heads 10–30(–50) mm; rays usually absent, if present 1–8 cm; 2d order rays infrequently present, 1–2 cm; bracts 3–6, erect to oblique, flat to V-shaped,(0.5–)2–10(–15) cm × 0.5–2 mm. Spikelets 5–10(–20), linear to linear-lanceoloid, (5–)8–12(–35) × 1.6–2.3(–2.5) mm; floral scales (6–)16–30(–76), laterally glossy reddish brown to brown, medially greenish, sometimes also reddish or brownish, laterally ribless, medially strongly 3-ribbed, ovate-lanceolate, 1.9–2(–2.3) mm (including prominent excurved cusp of 0.3–0.5 mm) × 0.8–1.1 mm, apex truncate, emarginate, or cuspidate. Flowers: stamens (1–)2–3; anthers ellipsoid, 0.3 mm, connectives not prolonged; styles 0.3–0.4 mm; stigmas 0.4–0.7 mm. Achenes brown, slightly stipitate, obovoid to oblong, 0.8–0.9 × 0.4–0.5 mm, apex abruptly apiculate, surfaces papillose.

Cyperus amabilis, commonly known as the foothill flatsedge,[2] is a species of sedge that is native to tropical and sub-tropical areas in the Americas, Africa and Asia.[3]

The species was first formally described by the botanist Martin Vahl in 1805.[3]

Cyperus amabilis es una planta de la familia de las ciperáceas.

Descripción

Plantas anuales. Tallos pocos a muchos, de 3-15(-20) cm de alto, delgados, estriados, lisos. Hojas más cortas que los tallos, de 1-1.5 mm de ancho, las vainas anchas en la base, abiertas y fuertemente nervadas con las nervaduras purpúreas, los márgenes escasamente escabriúsculos. Brácteas 3-5, folliformes pero a menudo más largas y más anchas, ascendentes. Rayos ausentes o hasta 9 cm; rayos secundarios raramente desarrollados hasta 2 cm. Espiguillas numerosas, 5-20(-35) x 1.5-2.3 mm, lineares, digitadas, formando cabezuelas hemisféricas hasta 30 mm de ancho; raquilla casi recta, persistente, con alas angostas. Glumas 1.5-2 x c. 1 mm, sin incluir la cúspide 0.3(-0.5) mm excurvada, extendiendo la costilla media verde fuertemente 3-nervia, ovado-lanceoladas, retusas en la base de la cúspide, deciduas, los márgenes quebradizos, semitranslúcidos, pardo-castaño. Estambres 1-3. Estilo 0.3-0.4 mm. Aquenios 0.8-0.9 x 0.4-0.5 mm, obovoides a oblongos, redondeadamente trígonos, obtusos, apiculados, cortamente estipitados, papilosos, pardos.[1]

Distribución y hábitat

Se encuentra en las orillas arenosas de ríos, campos abiertos de lava, orillas de caminos, áreas cultivadas a una altitud de 0-1000 metros en los Trópicos y subtrópicos.

Plantas de esta especie han sido confundidas con Cyperus cuspidatus Kunth y también han sido erróneamente identificadas como C. aristatus Rottb. (C. squarrosus L.), y C. uncinatus Poiret, especie distinta de Madagascar.

Taxonomía

Cyperus amabilis fue descrita por Martin Vahl y publicado en Enumeratio Plantarum... 2: 318. 1805.[1]
