Die Rooilipslang (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia) is 'n slang wat in Afrika suid van die Sahara voorkom. Die slang is nie giftig nie. Die Engelse naam is "Herald snake", terwyl dit in Ndebele as "Phimpi" bekend staan.[1]

Die slang het 'n helder oranje of rooi merk op die boonste lip. Die kop is donkerder as die liggaam en die slang se maag is wit. Hulle is kleinerig met 'n gemiddelde lengte van 45 cm en het 'n breë kop.

Dit is 'n stadig-bewegende slang wat aggressie toon as dit versteur word. Die voorkant van die liggaam word opgelig, die kop platgetrek en die liggaam word opgeblaas terwyl hulle sis en na die gevaar pik. Hulle byt maklik, maar is nie vir die mens giftig nie.

Die slang is ovipaar (eierlêend). Ses tot sestien eiers word op 'n slag gelê. Die eiers broei na 60 dae uit. Die kleintjies is 130-180 mm lank.

Rooilipslange vreet meestal paddas. Hulle het groot lem-agtige slagtande wat vir die doel aangepas is.

Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia, commonly known as the herald snake or the red-lipped snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa.

Description

Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia can be identified by its olive green or grey body, multiple white speckles, distinctive black head, and red, yellow, white, or black upper lip. It can grow to an average total length (including tail) of 70 cm (28 in), but may reach up to 1 metre (39 inches) in total length.[3]

Diet

C. hotamboeia feeds on amphibians (including rain frogs), lizards, and other snakes (only in captivity).[3]

Longevity

The red-lipped snake has been known to live for between 10 and 15 years.[3]

Reproduction

Adult females of C. hotamboeia lay between 6 and 19 eggs in early summer.[3]

Geographic range

Endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa, the herald snake is present in Zambia, throughout South Africa (except for the Karoo and Northern Cape) as well as Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, southern and central Mozambique, and northern Botswana.[3]

Habitat

The herald snake favors marshy areas in lowland forest, moist savanna, grasslands, and fynbos.[3]

Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia[2] présente un dos gris, brun, olive ou noir, habituellement marqué de taches blanches formant, chez les juvéniles et les jeunes adultes, des bandes transversales. Les côtés de la tête sont marqués de noir, noir-bleuté ou noir-violacé. Cette tache peut s'étendre vers l'arrière pour encercler l'occiput. Sa face ventrale est blanche, crème ou brun pâle, rarement pigmentée de sombre.
