The Iberian frog (Rana iberica), also known as Iberian stream frog, is a species of frog in the family Ranidae found in Portugal and Spain. Its natural habitats are rivers, mountain streams and swamps. It is threatened by habitat loss, introduced species, climate change, water contamination, and increased ultraviolet radiation.[2]
The Iberian frog can grow to about 7 cm (2.8 in) in length but a more normal size is 5 cm (2.0 in). Females tend to be larger than males. The tympanum can be seen just behind the eye and is about half its size in diameter. From the side of the head to the groin is a distinct ridge, the dorsolateral fold, which distinguishes this species from the common frog. The skin is smooth with fine granulations. The colour is very variable, being mainly olive, reddish or greyish-brown, sometimes with darker markings. A dark streak runs between the nostril and the eye, and a thin, white line marks the upper lip. The hind legs are sometimes barred with dark brown. The hind feet are more completely webbed than the common frog. The underside is pale, sometimes with darker spots, but the centre of the throat is not spotted.[3][4]
The Iberian frog has a distinctive call, which is generally produced at night. It sounds like "rao-rao-rao" and is issued at a rate of about three calls per second.[3]
The Iberian frog is endemic to Portugal and north-western and central Spain. It is a mountain species and has been recorded at altitudes up to 2,425 m (7,956 ft).[1] It is present in the northern half of Portugal and in Spain it is found in the region of Galicia, in west León and in north-west Zamora, with separate populations in mountainous regions in central Spain. It favours slow-moving streams and rivers with overhanging vegetation, ponds, and glacial lakes. It shares parts of its range with the agile frog (Rana dalmatina), Perez's frog (P. perezi) and the common frog (R. temporaria).[4]
The Iberian frog is an agile frog, jumping into the water if disturbed and swimming away rapidly.[3] It is active both by day and night, and feeds on beetles, flies, caddisflies, stoneflies, spiders, and harvestmen.[4] In Galicia and lowland Portugal, breeding takes place from November to March, but in upland areas, it occurs from March to May. Amplexus, with the male clinging to the back of the female, takes place in the water. Small clumps of eggs with a gelatinous coat are laid and are stuck to water weeds or placed beneath underwater stones. When the tadpoles hatch, they feed on vegetable matter and take about three months before they undergo metamorphosis into juvenile frogs. These are about 1.3 cm (0.5 in) long. Males become mature when they are about 3 cm (1.2 in) in length and females when they are rather larger.[3][4]
The Iberian frog is threatened by habitat loss through agriculture, deforestation, and the planting of non-native woodlands. Tourist development and recreational use of the land may cause disturbances. Introduced fish species and the presence of the American mink (Neogale vison), escaped from fur farms, may also reduce numbers. Parts of its range include two national parks, Parque Natural del Gorbea and Parque Natural de Izki, and in these it is protected. In other places, especially in the Sistema Central Mountains and Extremadura in Spain, populations are shrinking. The species is classified as being vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.[1]

Iberiar baso-igela[1] (Rana iberica) Iberiar penintsulako endemikoa den igel arrunt bat da. Penintsularen ipar-mendebaldean baino ez da agertzen. Bere banaketaren muinean nahiko espezie ugaria da, baina banaketaren mugatan, Euskal Herria kasu, oso espezie urria da eta gainera beherakada nabarmena jasaten ari da azken urteetan. Euskal Herrian, Urdaibai inguruko eta Gorbeiako ibaietan baino ez da aurkitzen.
Igel txikia eta liraina da, mutur motz eta biribildukoa. Ertz errostral bereiztua du. Narinak antzeko distantziara daude muturretik eta begietatik. Narinen arteko distantzia, distantzia interorbitala baino zertxobait handiagoa da. Behatzak nahiko tuberkulu subartikular garatuekin. Atzeko gorputz-adarrak oso luzeak dira. Azal leuna du, bizkarraldean eta atzeko gorputz-adarren atzealdean pikor batzuekin. Plegu dortsolaterala estua eta irtena. Ez du aho-zakurik, gorteiurako eskrezio pikortsu arre-grisaxkak egiten ditu. Azpialdean kolore arre-horixka, arre-grisaxka edo gorrixka du; bizkarraldean orban horixkak eta alboetan zuriak. Bizkarreko orbanak lausoak eta urriak dira normalean. Azpialdean orban erretikulatu gris edo beltzak ditu. Irisa urre-kolorekoa edo gorrixka du.[2][3]
Larbak kolore arre-grisaxa edo gorria du, gorputzean eta isatsean urre-koloreko orbanekin. Azpialde grisaxka edo gorrixka, gutxiago pigmentatua[4]. 49 mm luzerara iristen da[5].
Endemismo iberiarra da, penintsularen ipar-mendebaldean banatzen da, Galizian eta Portugaleko erdialde eta iparraldean batez ere[6]. Neurri txikiago batean Asturias, Kantabria, León, Zamora eta Euskal Herrian ere aurkitzen da. Burgos, Palentzian eta Erdialdeko Mendigunean ere aurkitu da. Euskal Herrian Urdaibai inguruko eta Gorbeia inguruko ibaietan soilik aurkitzen da eta kontserbazio arazo larriak ditu.
Ur hotz eta bizkorreko errekastotan aurkitzen da[7], sekula ez uretatik urruti[8]. Goi mendietako putzu eta lakuetan ere aurkitzen da. Espezie estenoikoa da, gorabehera termikoen eta deshidratazioaren aurrean sentikorra[9]. Nahiko bakartiak dira eta leialak dira beren bizilekuarekiko[10]. Euskal Herrian 620 m inguruko altituderarte aurkitzen da, baina Erdialdeko Mendigunean 2400m-ra ere aurkitu da.
Datuak Erdialdeko Mendigunean eginiko ikerketa batean bilduak dira[11]. Harrapakinak uretan eta lur lehorrean ehizatzen ditu, bereziki lehorrean. Hiru talde hauetan banatzen dira: Diptera, Coleoptera eta Araneae. Ez dago desberdintasun garrantzitsurik sexuen artean. Ikusi da eskuragarrienak diren taldeak, hau da, ugarienak direnak direla nagusi bere dietan.
Euskal Herrian eta kostaldeko beste inguruneetan aktibo mantentzen da urte osoan. Bestalde, mendiguneetan bere jarduera-tartea murrizten da. Gauez eta egunez aurkezten du jarduera. Egunez geldik egon ohi dira landarediaren artean, arroken gainean edo orbel artean[12]. Gaztetxoek eguneko jarduera izaten dute.
Arren gametogenesia tenperaturaren menpe dago, tenperaturak asko jaistean geratzen da bestela jarraia da[13]. Urtean zehar bizi den lekuetan ugaltzen da. Altitude baxuko ingurunetan azarotik martxora ugaltzen da. Arrak emea jarraitzen du soinu bat igorriz, eta emeak beste soinu bereizgarri bat igortzen du anplexuan dagoenean. Arrak, gorteiu garaian kailu gris-beltzaxka batzuk izaten ditu eta gorputzeko guruinek mukosa jariatzen dute, anplexua errazteko[14].
Euskal Herriko populazioetan igelak txikiagoak dira goi-mendietan baino, eta denbora gutxiago bizi dira, 4 urte.
Harraparietatik babesteko, geldirik egoten da errekastoen urertzean, eta bere kolorazioari esker kamuflatu egiten da, bai urertzeko goroldioarekin, bai errekastoaren hondoarekin eta baita orbelarekin ere[16]. Ihes egiteko uretara jauzi egiten du; ikusi da ihesean egin beharreko distantzia igo egiten dela errekastoko landaredia gutxitu ahala. Zapaburuek arrainak usaindu egiten dituzte eta jarduera jaisten dute hauen presentzian.
Harraparien artean anfibioak (Rana perezi oso proportzio baxuan bada ere), narrastiak (Natrix maura, Natrix natrix eta Vipera seonei), hegaztiak (Tyto alba) eta ugaztunak (Genetta genetta, Lutra lutra) aurkitzen dira.
Bizkarroien artean trematodoak eta akantozefaloak aurkitzen dira (Votjova eta Roca, 1996)
Euskal Herrian intaeres bereziko espeziea da, bertako populazioak murriztuak eta isolatuak daude.
Bere mehatxu faktoreak ondorengoak dira: uraren kutsadura isuri toxikoen eta zaborraren ondorioz, erriberako basoen mozketa eta bertako landarediaren suntsipena, uraren bidearen aldaketa lan oublikoen ondorioz, harrapari aloktonoen sarrera, ubideak lohiz betetzea nekazal-jarduera uztearen ondorioz, igelak bizi diren inguruetan jende asko ibiltzea...

Rana iberica
