Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax) is a species of perennial herb in the family Asphodelaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are native to Norfolk Island and New Zealand. They have simple, broad leaves and capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Silvereye, Thelyphassa lineata, Tui, and Calcutta myna. Individuals can grow to 2.5 m.
